Nylon rollers run quieter
Nylon doesn't need the lubrication steel does and it runs quieter on an old track, which matters in a cold-winter climate where steel contracts and gets noisier in January than it was in July.
Trinity, Madison
Most Trinity homes went up around 1988, and a lot of those houses still carry the steel rollers that shipped with the door. We swap them out from our Madison shop, 20 miles up the road.

Watch-outs
Trinity's housing mostly dates to around 1988, and garage door rollers from that era were almost always plain steel on a steel track, no nylon, no sealed bearing. Thirty-six years of opening and closing on dry steel wears a groove into the roller stem and chews up the track edge right where the roller rides. Nobody touches these unless something breaks, because a roller doesn't fail all at once \- it grinds, it binds a little more every month, and the door starts riding crooked long before it actually jumps track. On a door this age, if one roller has worn down to the stem, the rest on that side are close behind. We don't recommend replacing just the one that failed; matching steel rollers to a track that's also 36 years old is a losing bet, and most of these jobs end up being a full roller set per side rather than a single swap. That's not us upselling \- it's what the wear pattern actually shows once the door's off its hinges and the old hardware is in hand.
On the truck
We carry nylon rollers with sealed bearings on the truck, which is what most Trinity jobs end up needing once the original steel rollers are pulled.

What we don't stock is replacement track sections cut to older, non-standard rail profiles \- if the track itself is bent or worn past the point rollers alone can fix, that's a separate call and sometimes a longer wait on parts. We'll tell you straight if that's the case rather than force a roller swap onto a track that's already the problem.
Symptoms
If you're in Trinity and your door groans or catches around the same spot every time it opens, that's usually a roller, not the opener. Steel rollers from the late 1980s wear unevenly, so the door doesn't bind smoothly \- it jumps, then runs free, then jumps again at a different point in the track. Owners often blame the opener motor first, since that's the part that makes noise, but swap a worn roller for the opener and the sound doesn't change at all. A quick way to tell: watch the door from the side as it travels. If one roller visibly wobbles or the door rocks left-right instead of rising straight, that's roller wear, not a motor issue, and it's a cheaper fix than most people expect.
Job timing
We're based in Madison, about 20 miles from Trinity, so we plan the trip rather than treat it as a same-day drop-in - roller jobs here get scheduled, not squeezed in. Once on site, a full roller replacement on one door usually runs under two hours including the track check, longer if the track itself needs straightening or if hardware from 1988 has rusted onto the hinges. We won't pretend every roller call is quick; older hardware sometimes fights back, and that's the honest trade-off of working on a door this age instead of a newer one.
Questions
If your house dates to around the late 1980s, which covers a lot of Trinity, there's a good chance the original steel rollers are still in the track. Steel rollers from that era weren't built to last much past 20-25 years of regular use, so most homes here are well past the hardware's expected life even if nothing has failed yet.
Sometimes, but on a door this age we usually find the other rollers on the same side are close to the same wear level. Replacing one and leaving the rest means you're back out for another call within a year or two. We'll look at the actual wear before recommending a full set.
Yes, we come from our Madison shop, about 20 miles out. Because of the drive, roller replacement in Trinity gets scheduled rather than handled as a walk-up same-day call, so plan on booking ahead rather than expecting a same-morning fix.
Yes. Steel rollers and steel track both contract in cold weather, which tightens the clearance and makes an already-worn roller bind harder and louder. Nylon rollers handle temperature swings better, which is part of why we stock them as the standard replacement.
